Our History
Founded by longtime Los Gatos residents Ed and Shirley Burke, the Los Gatos Athletic Club has a long standing tradition of providing the most comfortable and encouraging atmospheres in the industry. In 1981 the Los Gatos Athletic Club opened its doors and Ed and Shirley, after 20 years of marriage, began their partnership in business.
Ed and Shirley have not only been a team in marriage and work, but in sport as well. Ed is a three–time Olympic hammer thrower and Shirley has been his coach from the beginning. After competing in the 1964 and the 1968 Olympic games, Ed took a long break from the sport during which he became the proud father of two children and settled in Los Gatos.
With a little encouragement and a vision Ed began training again at the age of 40 for his third Olympic games. With Shirley’s guidance and support, Ed not only made the 1984 Olympic team, but was also chosen as the flag bearer for the opening ceremonies.
Ed and Shirley are now retired from both competition and LGAC, though they stay in close contact and frequently visit their LGAC "family." Ed maintains his involvement in sport by coaching young hammer throwers; his training is responsible for producing five national team members and two 1996 Olympians. Ed has also served in numerous community based organizations and councils including the US Olympic Committee and Junior Olympic Committee.
Though they have retired, Ed and Shirley’s legacy of hard work, commitment and excellence continues at the LGAC. Together they have passed the torch to TempusClinic and General Manager, Mary Burks–a strong team dedicated to sharing cutting edge preventative health research and information with the entire community.

TempusClinic is now the leader in the clinical application of Advanced Early Detection Diagnostics (AEDD™) and has developed an expert–system diagnostic and therapeutic model. It combines early stage diagnostic precision with intensive lifestyle intervention to extend peoples’ lives, reduce illness and significantly improve the quality of life.
TempusClinic at the Los Gatos Athletic Club
In 2006, TempusClinic merged with the Los Gatos Athletic Club, becoming the first full service preventative healthcare facility of its kind. As a united force in modern healthcare, we at TempusClinic and the Los Gatos Athletic Club are moving the health and fitness industry in a new direction. Our staff, our programming and our facility all function to enable our members to be as healthy as possible. From the scientifically designed personal training programs to the café and culinary programs which promote healthful organic fare, every inch of TempusClinic at the Los Gatos Athletic Club has been designed with your health in mind.
As a member of LGAC you will have access to the latest research and technology in exercise, nutrition, and stress management. By participating in our numerous programs such as Purposeful Training1, nutritional consultation, stress management, wellness education and culinary instruction, you will be taking steps toward a longer life.
